Summer pools and the shoreline of Danube Island are as much a feature as the urban beaches in the Old City. Chillout areas everywhere invite people to hang out, and hip clubs to dance the night away. An evening in the open-air cinema is as much a part of Vienna s summertime lifestyle as flying visits to all manner of open-air events.

Chillout areas everywhere invite people to hang out, and hip clubs to dance the night away. An evening in the open-air cinema is as much a part of Vienna's summertime lifestyle as flying visits to all manner of open-air events.

Twenty-one kilometers of sand, grass and gravel beaches, including playgrounds and BBQ areas as well as restaurants, cafés and bars make summer days on Danube Island a real experience. From the end of July, the "Vienna Major" beach volleyball tournament will be held here as part of the international series with the same name – at which the best beach volleyball p s will ensure thrilling moments. The exciting combination of restaurant terraces, nostalgic beach pools and boat rentals defines the charm of the Old Danube. And on the urban beaches along the Danube Canal in the Old City, cool drinks are served by Strandbar Herrmann, Badeschiff, Tel Aviv Beach and numerous other trendy spots. The Motto am Fluss, the café and restaurant at the mooring site of the Twin City Liner, offers the best view of the colorful hustle and bustle along the Danube Canal.

The MuseumsQuartier, an art area with important exhibition houses such as the Leopold Museum and the Museum of Modern Art, once again offers a vast array of cultural events and open-air concerts in its extensive courtyards during "Summer in the MQ". Fans of fashion flock to the city when MQ Vienna Fashion Week hits the catwalk in September.

With the Summer Stage and the university campus in the Old AKH, Vienna has a string of other excellent spots that are ideally suited to hanging out in the open air. Before heading out to frequent open-air clubs such as the Pratersauna and Volksgarten Pavilion or to pay a visit to one of the trendy rooftop bars with a view of Vienna. Film-goers find even more open-air cinema on Karlsplatz, on the Augartenspitz, on the roof of the Main Library on the Gürtel, and in the Arena. And the musical “Elisabeth” is performed in concert style in front of Schönnbrunn Palace on July 5 and 6.

The program of workshops for everyone is extremely popular. The club festival Waves Vienna at the end of September brings a packed program of international acts to Vienna ranging from Alternative and singer-songwriters to Electronic and club music.

Vienna also serves up exciting exhibitions in the summer: An extensive show on Albrecht Dürer starts at the Albertina in September, dedicated mainly to the master’s drawings, as does a comprehensive retrospective on Maria Lassnig to mark the 100th birthday of this important Austrian painter. The Wien Museum MUSA focuses on “Red Vienna. 1919 to 1934”. And the Leopold Museum focuses on Richard Gerstl from September 27.
