Marriott International has pledged to eliminate single-use shower toiletry bottles from its properties worldwide, making it the latest major hotel group to commit to bulk-size bathroom amenities at scale.

Marriott has already rolled out large pump-top bottles of shampoo, conditioner and bath gel at around 1,000 properties in North America. The company expects to transition the rest of its hotel portfolio to the large bottles by December of next year.

Marriott estimates that the group's average pump-top dispenser contains the same amount of product as 10 to 12 single-use products and, when rolled out globally, the change will prevent around 500 million tiny bottles -- or 1.7 million pounds of plastic -- from ending up in a landfill annually.

Earlier this summer, InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) also took a hardline stance on single-use toiletry bottles, promising to make bulk-size bathroom amenities standard across its full property portfolio by the end of 2021.
