The China Central Television (CCTV) was founded on May 1, 1958, and officially began broadcasting on Sept 2. It’s a national public enterprise at the vice-ministerial level and has 24 organs and six subsidiaries.
CCTV is an important news and public opinion institute in China, as well as an important mouthpiece of the Party, the Chinese government and the public, and an important ideology and culture front. It is one of the most competitive mainstream media in China at the moment, with multiple functions in news dissemination, social education, culture and entertainment, and information services. CCTV is a main channel for the public to access to information and an important window for China to understand the world and for the world to learn about China. It has enjoyed increasing influence worldwide.
CCTV always insists on national responsibilities, a global view, and a humanistic touch. It has sped up modern communication system construction, and has developed 42 television channels, including 30 public channels and 12 digital premium channels. CCTV-1, a comprehensive channel, is broadcast in high and standard definition and Hong Kong versions; CCTV-4, an international channel, is broadcast worldwide in Asian, European and American versions; CCTV-9, a documentary channel takes on Chinese and English versions for the Chinese and foreign audience. CCTV also joined hands with five TV stations on Jan 1, 2012 to develop three-dimensional channel. To date, CCTV has 31 news bureaus across the country and has established a sound live broadcast alliance system with 50 regional TV stations. It has built a total of 70 facilities abroad, including two overseas substations, five regional centers and 63 news bureaus, forming a global news spread pattern.
