Shanghai Xintiandi, the resting room of this city, is where you can relax yourself among the hustle and bustle of city life. It is also a window to see the world and the native land, and a window to view yesterday and tomorrow. It was built on the basis of the old area of Stone Warehouse Gate, the landmark of Shanghai’s modern buildings, which has changed the housing function of Stone Warehouse Gate for the first time, and instead it endowed commercial function with it. Now, the former cultural and historical buildings are rebuilt into an entertainment center of fashion and recreation featured with international restaurants, shops and performance places.
Stone Warehouse Gate has maintained the old bricks and roof tiles inside, while outside buildings are designed according to the lifestyles, living pace and feelings of the 21st century, making it full of modern atmosphere.
Wandering through it, you may feel like you have been transported back to the 1920s, but a sharp contrast is waiting for you once you step into one of these buildings that are modern and fashionable. The special concept of Shanghai Xintiandi may lie in the experience of yesterday, tomorrow and today.
Before construction, this used to be a building cluster with nearly a hundred years of history. The buildings from 1850s were carved with deep historical footprints. Therefore, it is a combination of Chinese and western culture, and more of a representation of the modern history of Shanghai. However, as with the continuing development, the former glorious Stone Warehouse Gate can no longer meet the need of growing housing places. A specialist once predicted with worry that in the 21st century, there would no longer be the original Stone Warehouse Gate.
