Wuhan is the capital of Hubei province, China, and is the most populous city in Central China. It is located in the eastern Jianghan Plain at the intersection of the middle reaches of the Yangtze and Han rivers. Arising out of the conglomeration of three cities, Wuchang, Hankou, and Hanyang, Wuhan is known as "Jiusheng Tongqu (the nine provinces' leading thoroughfare)"; it is a major transportation hub, with dozens of railways, roads and expressways passing through the city and connecting to major cities in the Chinese Mainland.

History

According to archaeological discoveries and ancient records, more than 10,000 years ago, some people had already settled down in Wuhan. Over 3,500 years ago, urban civilization had already begun to spark in Panlongcheng, an ancient city in the northern area of Wuhan at that time.

During the Three Kingdoms Period, which dates from 1,700 years ago, Wuhan was a noted battlefield. After the Ming and the Qing Dynasties, Hankou had gradually developed into one of The Four Famous Nationwide Towns. More than 100 years ago, Wuchang was the birthplace of the Revolution of 1911.

Natural Environment

Wuhan is now the capital of Hubei Province with an area of 8,494 square kilometers. The world's 3rd longest river, the Yangtze River and its branch, the Hanshui River, run through the city and divide it into three parts: Wuchang, Hankou and Hanyang. It is located at 113°41'E to 115°05' E and 29°58'N to 31°22' N.

Climate

Wuhan's climate is humid subtropical with abundant rainfall and four distinctive seasons. Wuhan is known for its oppressively humid summers, when dewpoints can often reach 26 °C or more.
