Woven Bamboo Wares with Porcelain Bodies Inside

This craftsmanship originates in Chengdu of the Qing Dynasty, with a history of more than one hundred years. The entire production process, from stock, silk making and weaving, to ornamentation, is by manual operation with hands and knife. Every bamboo thread is shaped in compliance with the porcelain body and tightly attached to the face; all the joints are fully concealed as if the utensil is born to be one whole piece, hence, the craftwork is also called porcelains covered by bamboo silk which derives only from the surface layer of bamboo. With delicate and dense fibre, it is desiccation resistant, ametabolic, worm-damage-free, water-resistant and cleanable after special processing. The handicraft has its emphasis on the integration of sight enjoyment and practicality. From canteens, rice bowls, cigarette cases in the Qing Dynasty, to modern vases, sugar basins, caddies, vovered-bowl tea, toothpick canisters, purses, caskets, etc., they are beautiful and banausic tourism souvenirs and artifacts. Various patterns, in particular knitted around the mouths or across the handles of the woven wares such as tea, wine and coffee set, stationery, smoking and sofa set, or designs on the curved little handgrips of nozzle cups, are the unique accomplishment that distinguishes the craftsmanship from other types of bamboo weaving.
