Katholische Hofkirche was built in the 16th century. There are three main halls in the church, and King Maximilian I’s tomb is inside. The church is known for its 28 Bronze Warrior Statues on both sides of the tomb. These statues are the most important art works of the German Renaissance Period and are also one of the most famous art souvenirs in Tirol. From 1553 to 1556, Ferdinand I ordered to build this church which is called “The Final Resting Place for Knights.” It became Maximilian I’s tomb but the Emperor wasn’t buried here. Maximilian I’s long cherished wish was to be buried in Innsbruck after death, but unfortunately his wish was unfulfilled. In 1519, he was buried in Hofburg Palace Church in the town of Vienna after he passed away. People built a Hofkirche, which is a symbol of the German Emperor’s authority in the Palace of Innsbruck; it has been preserved until now. There is a coffin with marble in the center of the church now. The bronze statue of the Emperor Maximilian is on the sarcophagus. There are 24 marble reliefs around the sarcophagus which is a record of the Emperor’s life. Around the sarcophagus are 28 bronze statues which symbolize the ancestors and descendants of Maximilian I.
