Hong Kong is a shopping paradise for many people, but my trip to Hong Kong is purely journey related. I prefer to choose a peaceful and quiet place rather than travel in a noisy city center, and so the Lamma Island was chosen to be my ideal destination. You can feel two different kinds of island styles in a day. The beautiful beach, delicious seafood and the easy-going hiking, and the outing unquestioningly proof that it is a great place to relax the mind.

Transportation

Because of its proximity to city center, Lamma Island has become a leisure resort. It will take you about 30 minutes to get from Central Ferry Pier 4 to Yung Shue Wan Wharf by boat.

After getting off the boat, you will see bicycles that filled both sides. Bicycles are the means of transportation on the island. There are no tall buildings here, only bungalows. I didn't rent a bike because I prefer walk while taking some photos. While walking on the Yung Shue Wan Main Street, shops and restaurants seem to be all around me, as well as the exotic bars, it is really a great pleasure to wander around here.

Besides the cuisines from different countries, there are numerous little stores for handicrafts, living products, and various home- baked cookies all along the Yung Shue Wan Main Street. Just like the Hippies in the 1960s in the West, people here are fond of the simple and natural life, but it does not mean that they don't understand the meaning of life.

Lamma Island is the third largest island in Hong Kong after Lantau Island and Hong Kong Island., which belongs to the islands district of Hong Kong's eighteen administrative districts.

There were signs of human settlement here as early as the Neolithic Period. Nowadays, fishing is the main way to make a living for islanders. Most of the islanders are not native-born and residents that come from other parts accounts for half of the total population of the island. What attract them are the beautiful environment, mountains, bamboo forests, villages and the beach surrounding the island.

There is a Tin Hau Temple with over one hundred years of history near the Yung Shue Wan, in which shows the ancient whalebones.

The guide boards of the Lamma Island is very clear and you would not be worried about getting lost even if this is your first trip here. Owing to its silence and plainness, more and more expats who work in Hong Kong settle down here. They bring cafes, bars, bikinis and many other exotic ideas. Lamma Island has become a unique island with a European flavor, which has attracted notable members of the Chinese youths who also filled the island with art.

One of the must-do things on the island is the tasting of the Tofu pudding. My friends and I luckily encountered a Tofu pudding shop opened by an old lady, which is very popular with a lot of people standing in line for food.

Walking across the Yung Shue Wan Main Street, we didn't choose to visit the Wind Power Station's big pinwheel on the mountain, instead, my friends tanned on the beach and had a chat while I just stood upon the rock near the shore and took some photos to look for a good time by myself. The island’s busiest season is in autumn and that’s when we can enjoy the gentle sea breeze, surging waves, various seabirds and others all about in the sea.

The railings set all along the way could minimize the risk for accidents.

Green plants are everywhere such as banana trees and palm trees and we can hear the calls of frogs and crickets. Most of the boats will first reach the Yung Shue Wan Village which is the starting point for many scenic spots and beaches of the island.

We continued our hike and reached the Hung Shing Yeh Beach, which is the most famous and lively beach. There are always a large number of people swimming here. I stood on the rock and started the never-ending shooting of the sea.

I picked up a pebble and habitually wrote some words in the sand. It is a habit of mine that I must leave my mark once I visit a beach, although it will be flooded with sea water soon enough.

Lamma Island is composed of several remote and small fishing villages and is famous thanks to Chow Yun-Fat's home. Today, the island features its picturesque landscapes and delicious seafood as well as the houses featuring a combination of Chinese and Western styles, which is a perfect leisure resort for tourists.

Sok Kwu Wan is the starting point of the Family Walk. The footpath winds upward along the beach and across the high grass with magnificent scenery all along the way.

At the moment of the sunset, we reached the Lo So Sing Beach. There was fascinating scenery to be enjoyed, especially highlights the leisured and plain life in offshore island. We really want to tightly seize the days we spent on this island paradise.

It will take about 30 minutes to get from SokKwu Wan Pier to Lo So Shing Bay by foot.

The water quality of Lo So Shing is good enough for beach swimming.

There are many open-air restaurants situated on the bay, which always attract many tourists to enjoy delicious seafood such as Fried Crabs with Pepper, Garlic-steamed Shrimps, Crisp Fried Fresh Squid, and Steamed Fish with Scallion and Ginger.

Hong Kong is really a food heaven and to eat seafood in Lamma Island has become trendy for local people.

Unlike Yung Shue Wan, which is filled with exotic flavors, Sok Kwu Wan is full of oriental flavors. At dusk, we selected one of the most popular seafood restaurants and dug into the interesting taste.

After supper, the owner gave us tickets back to the city center. Time really goes by fast; sometimes it's really good to feel the slow life on the island.

Recommended food

Before coming to Hong Kong, many people choose Lamma Island as the must-see sightseeing in advance, just because the of TV series “Food of Love.” There are many options to choose from: Tofu Pudding, Lobster with Cheese, Steamed Sea Bass, Scallop with Mashed Garlic, Abalone with Lobster Sauce, and Mantis Shrimp.

Postscript

Lamma Island reflects the harmonization between Chinese and Western culture. At the same time, the island is also overflowing with strong artistic aspirations.

A dragon boat race will be held on May 1st to celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival. The most distinctive festival is the Tin Hau Festival, which falls on March 23rd in annual lunar calendar, and the Cantonese opera performances and fireworks ceremony will be presented in both Sok Kwu Wan and Yung Shue Wan.

When the chronic stresses of life have taken their toll on you, there is a perfect place to relax your mood, it is Lamma Island.
