90% of ATMs and over 100,000 Merchant Locations in Canada Accept UnionPay

UnionPay International announced today that the top five banks in Canada have all accepted UnionPay cards. UnionPay is now accepted at 90% of ATMs and more than 100,000 merchant locations in Canada. The transaction number of UnionPay cards in Canada grew by over 100% during the first three quarters of this year.

Canada is one of the countries with the largest number of overseas Chinese, whom work and study there. Since Canada launched 10-year-multi-entry visas in 2014, about 1.5 million Chinese people applied and got this type of visa, and more and more Chinese tourists are visiting Canada each year. In this context, UnionPay International is strengthening its cooperation with the major institutions in Canada to jointly improve the acceptance environment of UnionPay and to offer better services to tourists visiting Canada as well as the local cardholders.

“Many merchants around the campus accept UnionPay cards, and I paid my tuition fee with my UnionPay card via Western Union.” Ba Lei, a Chinese student studying in Canada said that he is used to using UnionPay cards in Canada. “I went to Toronto this summer for internship and I found that it’s easy to use UnionPay cards in the shopping center and Chinatown there.”

Besides acceptance at ATMs and POS terminals, UnionPay are also accepted online. A dozen of the local educational institutions and famous local online merchants support UnionPay Online Payment. Meanwhile, Canada is the first market that has launched UnionPay mobile QuickPass service in North America. UnionPay cardholders are able to pay by tapping their UnionPay chip cards with “QuickPass” signage or QuickPass-enabled mobile phones at a number of the local daily consumption merchants.

Local cardholders are also able to enjoy the service offered by UnionPay. UnionPay International has cooperated with Bank of China and Industrial and Commercial Bank of China in issuing UnionPay cards in Canada. Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce has offered UnionPay cross-border remittance service, with which Canadian residents are able to conveniently transfer money to the UnionPay cards issued by 13 banks in mainland China.
