On Saturday, Disney's California Adventure announced it will be closing the popular “The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror” attraction to make room for a new ride based on the movie franchise, “Guardians of the Galaxy.”
According to NBC Los Angeles, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige announced Saturday at Comic-Con in San Diego that the Twilight Zone attraction will be revamped to become a “Guardians of the Galaxy” experience next summer.
The Disney Parks blog announced that visitors will be able to enjoy the Tower of Terror until early 2017. NBC also reported that when the concept images were shown at the San Diego Comic-Con, many of those in attendance booed the news.
The new attraction—dubbed “Guardians of the Galaxy - Mission: BREAKOUT!”—will feature Rocket the raccoon asking for the help of the passengers on the ride to break his friends out of The Collector's display cases.
Using some of Star-Lord’s favorite music from the 1970s, the attraction will give riders breathtaking free fall sensation with stunning visual and audio effects. The new “Guardians of the Galaxy” ride is scheduled to open in the summer of 2017 when the second installment of the movie series hits theaters worldwide.
There have been rumors for months that the same fate would meet the Tower of Terror at Disney World in Orlando, but due to a complicated rights deal that Marvel has with Universal, the GotG gang will likely only be appearing at Universal attractions east of the Mississippi River.
As the L.A. Times reported, the news of the demise of Tower of Terror has been met with a wave of social media outrage.
