Sanya Phoenix International Airport received its 20 millionth passenger on December 31st, 2018. It is the first time that the airport’s annual passenger throughput exceeded 20 million. The high figures signal a new golden period in the airport’s development.

Airport passenger throughput is an important indicator for assessing a city’s economic strength. Sanya, a tropical coastal resort city in Hainan province, witnessed rapid social and economic development in recent years.

In 2007, passenger throughput at the airport exceeded 5 million passengers for the first time, a year-on-year increase of 36 percent.

In 2011, the airport handled more than 10 million passengers for the first time, a year-on-year increase of 11.5 percent.

It saw an average annual growth of 11.78 percent for passengers during the 12th Five-Year Plan period (2011-15).

Thanks to the newly-approved development plan of the China (Hainna) Pilot Free Trade Zone and the 30-day visa-free travel entry for 59 countries, the number of passengers at the Sanya Phoenix International Airport kept soaring.

At present, the airport has international air routes connecting the city to 15 countries and regions, including 34 international direct air routes, 3 transit air routes, and 6 international intensified air routes. 15 more international air routes are expected to be opened between Sanya and destinations in Europe, Oceania and America in 2019, according to the airport authorities.
