The Navy Museum was established by PLA Navy and is the only military museum in China presenting the development of PLA Navy. It is situated at 8 Laiyang Road, neighboring Luxun Park on the east and Mini Qingdao on the west. It is facing the sea on the south, and looking Zhanqiao Pier on the north. It was opened to the public on October 1st 1989.

The Museum is composed of uniform and gift exhibition hall, weaponry exhibition area, warship exhibition area, and sea-battle history hall, with a total area of 40,000 sqm. The exhibits unfold the birth and glorious development of PLA Navy.

The uniform and gifts hall exhibits pictures and drawings showing the history of Chinese navy in three periods: ancient period, modern period (before 1949) and present period (after 1949), navy uniforms, badges, rank insignias and fittings in different periods, and 230 gifts received from foreign friends; the weaponry area and warship exhibition area exhibit retired warships of various sizes and categories, airplanes, missiles, ship (coast) cannons, marine weapons, surveying and communication equipments, amphibious tanks etc., including the torpedo boat visited by former Premier Zhou Enlai when he reviewed Navy vessels in Qingdao. the “Great Wave No. 1” submarine-carried missile reviewed by Mr. Deng Xiaoping, former Chairman of Central Military Committee, the airplane and Hongqi Car used by General Xiao Jinguang, the first Navy Commander, the “Liberation” cannon boat which attacked Kuomintang’s navy base alone, and the first generation marine airplane.

The warship exhibition area is within Mini Qingdao port. There are first generation destroyer “Anshan”, type 01missile escort vessel “Chengdu”, and type 33 conventional submarine “Great Wall” which is shown to the public for the first time.The museum is a classroom for enhancing the ocean awareness and patriotism education. It was designated as the base for patriotism education and national defense education by Qingdao Municipal Government and Shandong Provincial Government, as national patriotism education demonstration base by the Department of Publicity of CPC, and as AAA tourist spot by the National Tourism Administration. Visitors can learn or review the glorious history of PLA Navy under the leadership of the Communist Party of China.
