The Village got its name from the legend that Huang Shigong, the teacher of Zhang Liang, once practiced alchemy here. Located in the Wulingyuan forest park, it is a giant spectacular landscape viewing square platform on the mountain with an elevation of 1,080 meters. The village covers an area of 16.5 hectares, higher in the southwest and lower in the northeast. It is surrounded by steep precipices, cliffs and verdant trees. A number of aerial observation decks protrude from the cliffs. In rainy weather, the village is mist-shrouded and all peaks seem to come together; and during sunrise in the morning, thin mist flies here and there and the mountains are dimly visible and changing magically. At nights, under the bright moon and stars, the mountains look graceful and quietly elegant under the ethereal background. In cold snowy winter, icicles hang on trees, and the peaks and valley look as if it is dressed in silver. Walking around the village, it will feel as if the peaks are flying, and you can take in a panoramic view of the grotesque scenery from near and afar. Therefore, there goes the saying that "it is not worthwhile to visit Zhangjiajie if you do not go to Huangshi Stockade Village".

In the morning of September 7, 1983, some bright light appeared above the Feiyun Cave at the northern end of the village. Called "Buddha's Light" in ancient times, it is a natural phenomenon, characterized by a colorful light ring formed by sunlight penetrating through cloud, with a diameter up to several meters and lasting for 20 minutes. There is one tourist line for walking onto to the village between the north and the south respectively. Besides, a driveway is available behind the mountain from Laomowan to the back gate of the village, covered with sand-gravel surface. There are wonderful attractions along the way, including the One Pillar in the South, Star Picking Platform, Traces of Bridge Piers, and the Liuqi Penthouse, etc.
