An archive that allows visitors to trace Hokkaido’s history through documents and photographs and travel back in time to the development period.

The Archive of Hokkaido, which collects, archives, and allows users to access various materials including documents and records regarding Hokkaido history, is located inside the Former Hokkaido Government Office Building (Red Brick Office). The archive’s collection includes approximately 63,000 official documents from the Hokkaido government offices, approximately 44,000 private documents, and approximately 166,000 historical records, maps, photographs, and books regarding Hokkaido history.

The archive organizes exhibitions of various documents and records organized by themes such as the history of the birth of the Hokkaido Development Office, living during the development era, education, city, and Ainu. Through valuable historical materials, the archive teaches visitors about the Hokkaido pioneers of the Meiji period, their work, and Hokkaido’s historical and cultural past in general.

Closed Exhibition Room: Year-end through New Year holidays
