Jardin des Plantes

A French-style 23-hectare botanic garden created in 1635 under the reign of Louis XIII, situated between the Mosquée de Paris, the Université de Jussieu and the Seine. It is the garden of the Muséum d’Histoire Naturelle. It is home to historic trees, a rose garden, thousands of plants and flowers, four tropical greenhouses, a zoo, and specialist gardens including that of the Botanical school. It offers guided tours, exhibitions, training and special activities for adults and children.

Description

The Jardin des Plantes has been a place to discover nature for four centuries. Here, you can walk around the Roseraie (rose garden) and the Jardin Alpin (the alpine garden). A wide range of living, naturalized or fossilized species are displayed in the Ménagerie (zoo), the Grande Galerie de l’Evolution and the Galerie de Paléontologie, in an environment that is constantly changing.

Entrance fees and modalities

Independent tour Jardin Alpin: €2 Saturday, Sunday and bank holidays from 1 April to 31 October (tickets sold at the 'reptile' till in the Menagerie. Grandes Serres: €6. Reduced rate: €4 Free entry to other gardens in the Jardins des Plantes.

Exceptional closure Jardin de Pivoines: temporarily closed. The Grandes Serres will be closed on 25 December 2013 and 1 January 2014.

The Jardin de l'Ecole de Botanique and the Jardin de Roses et de Roches: open every day from 7.30am to 8pm in the summer; 8am to 5.30pm in the winter.

Jardin Alpin: open from 1 April to 31 October. Open Monday to Friday from 8am to 4.40pm, Saturday from 1.30pm to 6pm, Sunday and bank holidays from 1.30pm to 6.30pm.

Jardin des Iris et des Plantes Vivaces: open Monday to Friday from 8.30am to 4.30pm.

The Grandes Serres: open in the summer from 10am to 6pm and until 6.30pm on Sundays; in the winter from 10am to 5pm. Closed on Tuesday.

 The Grandes Serres are specially opened on 24 December and 31 December 2013. During adverse weather conditions (snow fall, ice, strong winds, heat waves), the Jardin des Plantes and the Grandes Serres can be closed to the general public. Check before arriving.
