MUDE - Fashion and Design Museum

MUDE makes Lisboa new design capital

Lisboa is fast becoming one of the must visit capitals of the cultural tourism destinations, now with MUDE - Fashion and Design Museum, in the capital’s historic centre.

In addition to representing an important contribution to the Portuguese capital’s cultural and arts offer, MUDE, located on the Rua Augusta walking street, forms part of the Baixa downtown renovation project, housed within a magnificent building that was once a bank’s head office.

The building is a work in progress concept, and will be totally renovated in order to house within its four levels, the museum's collection and services, bookshop and coffee shop, as well as rehearsal and conference halls. The project also envisions areas for educational purposes, an auditorium and exhibit halls.

The museum’s collection includes the Francisco Capelo collection with a total of 2,500 works. It is regarded as one of the best collections of its kind in the world.

The link between the worlds of design and fashion, the high quality of the collection, and the museum’s personal concept, make MUDE a unique cultural venue on the international scene, and turning Lisboa into one of the new “design capitals”.

Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga

Because of the size, diversity and cultural relevance of its collections, the MNAA is the most important Portuguese museum and one of the world’s great museums.

The various works on exhibition allow for an overview and an albeit necessarily residual understanding of the art produced in a country whose territorial unification occurred at a surprisingly early stage. The museum’s pieces consequently cover a chronological span ranging from the 13th to the 19th century.

Yet the MNAA’s great relevance at both a national and international level is further enhanced by the fact that it presents the most important collection of old Portuguese painting, especially from the 15th and 16th centuries, a very significant collection of foreign painting that includes a large number of masterpieces, and some highly regarded works resulting from the artistic diaspora associated with the period of the Portuguese Discoveries.
