The opening of the new wing of the main centre of the Macro – Rome’s Museum of Contemporary Art – redefines its vocation to encourage contemporary art and to serve as a location promoting images.

The MACRO presents the public with a multiple, enquiring, up-to-date vision of the vitality of international and national contemporary art putting together an expressive mosaic of different languages. The Museum’s new entrance, on the corner between Via Nizza and Via Cagliari, represents a new architectural stage for art.

The project, designed by French Architect Odile Decq, embraces a total pure exhibition space of nearly 4,350 square metres in addition to which there are the services and general public zones: the 2,500 square metre terrace, conference hall, bookshop, restaurant, bar, car park and teaching area altogether covering 19,500 square metres. The new structure’s dynamic and winding form, perfectly integrating with the pre-existing structure, now creates a sensual and luminous setting where different languages of today may find their natural habitat.

The MACRO circuit is carving out a new cultural path for the city, also made possible thanks to a dialogue between the new Via Nizza/Via Cagliari centre and the MACRO Testaccio exhibition pavilions, which remain geared towards promoting contagion between the arts and cultural realities. They have quickly become key centres in Rome life, cultural magnets capable of attracting a cross-section of energy and interest of a young, Roman and increasingly international public.
