Tai Shan is situated in the north of Fengyugou which is 23 kilometers southwest of Taiyuan. It was initially built during the Jingyun period in the Tang Dynasty as a Taoist temple called Hao Tian Ci. Later, it was transformed into a Buddhism temple in the early Ming Dynasty, but was destroyed in the Jin and Yuan dynasties and was rebuilt in the Ming Dynasty.

As the mountains here are not of the same height, the temple buildings are well proportioned according to their location. From the lower part to the upper part, there are gates, the drum and bell tower, side corridors, the Mahavira Hall, a hexagonal Guanyin pavilion, the Manjusri Hall and the Samantabhadra Hall. Inside the halls there are Buddha statues, which were initially created in the Ming Dynasty and featured skillful handcrafts, simple colors and stunning poses. Behind the temple there is a Lotus Cave where there is water all year round. In the east corner of the front yard, there is a stele cast during the Jingyun Period in the Tang Dynasty.
