Dadeng Dao, an island being 75km from Xiamen CBD, has a duty free market called Taiwan Small Goods Trade Market. Over the years, the market has flourished. This is a place where imported goods made in Taiwan are free of import duties and taxes.

This small goods trading market was opened in May, 1995. With 22 trading companies and over 300 shops, the market sells six categories of Taiwan goods including food, animal husbandry, clothing, and medical products.

Being duty-free, the market attracts many visitors, of both local and foreign. It has been an important gateway for cross-strait trade. Statistics from Xiamen customs indicate that from January to August this year 8,277 tons of goods have been imported to the island with a total value of over 8 million US dollars. Since then, duty-free allowances have been further relaxed.

According to a press conference at Xiamen customs, from October 1st, tourists who shop at the Small Commodities Trading Markets at Xiamen Dadeng Island will be able to buy up to three thousand Yuan worth of duty-free goods, an increase of two thousand Yuan over the previous quota.

With the new free duty quota, the tourists can now buy more expensive products, such as electronic appliances.

A popular product at the Taiwan Small Goods Trade Market is the famous Jinmen Chinese chopping knives made of recycled bomb casings. Interestingly, these knives are made out of the metal from the canon balls that were left over on Jinmen and Dadeng Dao. For some foreign tourists, this merchandise is a truly historic piece that can be taken home.
