St. Gertrude's New Church was built in 1906 according to architect Wilhelm von Strick's designs at what was then called Aleksandrs Square, now the intersection of Brīvības Street, Cēsu Street and Tallinas Street.

In the past, the place where the church stands now used to be a popular water supply source for Riga residents, and this is where the Big Pump was built. The area was quite popular with travellers to Riga, and it was a frequent place for fairs.

The new church building became a remarkable architectural feature along the city's main street. Stylistically, the lines of the church building resemble Art Noveau styling, and it is strikingly different from all the other churches in Riga. On the ground floor of the church, below the altar, the water well can still be seen today. The church steeple is 69 metres tall.
