Founded in 1948, Riga Film Studio is one of the oldest motion picture studios in Northeastern Europe. The film studio has been operating in its current premises at 3 Šmerļa iela since 1961; more than 180 motion pictures and documentary films have been produced here, including such legendary Latvian film classics as "Purva bridējs" (The Slough Wader), "Kapteiņa Enriko pulkstenis" (Captain Enroko's Watch), "Vella kalpi" (The Devil's Servants), "Mērnieku laiki" (Surveyor Times), "Ceplis" and many others.

During the soviet rule, the Riga Film Studio was where most Latvian films were shot and edited. On the average, 15 motion pictures were produced by Riga Film Studio every year, providing jobs for around 1,000 people.

Today, Riga Film Studio offers quality pavilions for shooting various scenes, and an extensive collection of costumes and props. The studio has up-to-date sound and lighting equipment, a special hall for film screenings, and more.
