The 6-foot-6-inch illuminated letters on the exterior wall of the Salma Family Building in the heart of Parkview Green Community spell out the words "love over rules". Located in an alley in Mission St., this light sculpture is the first permanent public artwork in the United States, made by New York artist Willis Thomas in honor of his cousin who was murdered in 2000. The text, composed of flashing white neon lights, was the last message that Thomas' cousin sent him. One line per word, is "love over rules" or "love is the rules"? Encourage interpretation in different ways. Thomas graduated from the California College of the Arts in 2004 and has deep connections with San Francisco and culture here.
