Honolulu's Bishop Museum is extending a popular exhibit, and making it easier for visitors to see it.
Originally set to conclude Jan. 29, "Journeys: Heritage of the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands" will now remain at the museum's J.M. Long Gallery through Feb. 27, according to a statement from the museum.
"Journeys" focuses on the Papahanaumokuakea national monument, which at nearly 583,000 square miles is larger than all the other U.S. national parks combined.
The exhibit features immersive underwater footage aboard a model submarine, a Battle of Midway flight simulator and artifacts such as ancient fishing weights and stone bowls. In addition, exploration of Papahanaumokuakea in recent years has led to discoveries such as a new deep-sea butterflyfish species, several specimens of which are on display at the museum's Science Adventure Center.
In other news, the museum last month began offering complimentary shuttle service three days a week at two central Waikiki locations.
On Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, visitors can catch the shuttle at the Ilikai Hotel flagpole at 9:45 a.m. At 10 a.m. the shuttle will stop at the Duke Kahanamoku statue.
At 12:30 p.m., the shuttle will depart from the museum, dropping off visitors at the flagpole at 1 p.m. and at the statue at 1:15 p.m.
