UnionPay International announced today that it has reached an agreement with Unicre, the largest acquirer in Portugal, in enabling all the merchants in the Unicre network to accept UnionPay cards. Now, UnionPay’s acceptance network covers about 40% of the merchants in Portugal. Ge Huayong, Chairman of China UnionPay, and Luis Flores, CEO of Unicre attended the ceremony. Cai Run, Chinese Ambassador to Portugal was present to witness.

China is Portugal’s largest trade partner in Asia. Chinese enterprises are investing more in Portugal and an increasing number of Chinese people live in the country. In the meantime, the Portuguese government is also taking multiple measures to attract Chinese tourists: it has newly set up visa application centers in 6 cities in mainland China, namely Fuzhou, Guangzhou, Shenyang, Wuhan, Chengdu and Nanjing, and has launched the Chinese version of the Lisbon Shopping Destination website. In 2015, the number of Chinese tourists to Portugal witnessed a year-on-year growth of about 40%.

In order to meet the payment needs of both tourists to Portugal and the Chinese people living there, UnionPay International continues to enhance its cooperation with Unicre and other mainstream institutions in optimizing its acceptance network there. Unicre has enabled 40,000 of its POS terminals to accept UnionPay cards, and this agreement will realize the acceptance of UnionPay at its remaining 40,000 POS terminals. UnionPay cards will all be accepted at all the ATMs in Portugal.

Ge Huayong said, this year is the first year of the second 10-year comprehensive strategic partnership between China and Portugal. The trade and economic cooperation and personnel exchanges between the two countries are expected to be closer. Following this trend, UnionPay is actively promoting its business in Portugal and is improving card-using experiences. We plan to enable all the POS terminals in Portugal to accept UnionPay cards by the end of next year, make breakthroughs in mobile QuickPass acceptance, local card issuance and online payment, and to accelerate the launch of our innovative products and services in Europe.

Luis Flores said, an increasing number of Chinese tourists are visiting Portugal, and UnionPay cards are the payment method they use most commonly. Therefore, Unicre is willing to deepen its cooperation with UnionPay International in promoting more local merchants to accept UnionPay cards in order to deliver more convenient financial services to visitors. Accepting UnionPay also helps merchants attract more customers, and thus realize an all-win result.

With UnionPay’s acceptance network keep expanding outside mainland China, it is now fairly convenient to use UnionPay cards in popular tourist destinations in Europe. So far, UnionPay is accepted in 39 countries and regions in Europe, covering about 2 million merchants there. The transaction volume of UnionPay cards in the UK, Spain and Czech grew remarkably during the National Day holiday this year.
