Hong Kong Airlines is proud to be recognised by the Airport Authority of Hong Kong (AAHK) for its commitment and ongoing efforts to implement the highest level of safety standards in its operations. The airline received one corporate and seven individual accolades at the “2018/19 Airport Safety Recognition Scheme” awards presentation ceremony held at Hong Kong International Airport today.
This is the fifth consecutive year that Hong Kong Airlines has been recognised under the various categories in AAHK’s annual airport safety scheme.
Commenting on the HKIA Safety Excellence Award (Merit), Hong Kong Airlines Director of Corporate Safety, Quality Assurance & Security, Capt. Alex Linhares reaffirmed the airline’s commitment in providing a safe experience on all levels.
“Hong Kong Airlines puts safety at the heart of our operations and this recognition by Airport Authority Hong Kong is a testament to the hard work that our staff have put in to fulfil our corporate safety responsibilities. We will continue to adhere to the highest safety standards and maintain a safe environment for our staff and customers,” he adds.
For the individual awards under “Accident Prevention Measures” category, Hong Kong Airlines has continued to review its operations and make adjustments to elevate safety in the workplace and its service delivery offering in the past year.
Working hand in hand with crew members, a new technique was introduced to the handling of dining carts to reduce workplace injuries during a flight. On ground, Hong Kong Airlines has set up “Family Zone” for travellers who require extra assistance, including parents travelling with young children or infants, pregnant passengers, the elderly and customers with special needs. Designated Care Ambassadors are on hand to offer extra care and assist passengers with large items such as strollers or wheelchairs throughout the check-in process.
The Hong Kong Airlines Corporate Safety team was also recognised for their efforts, including ongoing evaluation of weight and handling procedures of service equipment in the cabin. They were also credited for arranging timely courses for check-in staff on the carriage of dangerous goods such as fireworks products during the winter peak.
To ensure that service providers comply with safety policies, Hong Kong Airlines regularly monitors and manages ramp activities to ensure that all ramp equipment or vehicles keep a safe distance of 8cm to avoid any dent or damage to the aircraft. The team also works with its catering company to review and modify the means of catering truck access to prevent workers from falling off the vehicle.
Last but not least, Hong Kong Airlines was acknowledged for initiating a “Driving Safety” task force to enhance the equipment and monitor the driving behaviours of ramp drivers in HKIA. The task force will also closely monitor and investigate accident causes, and advise the required actions for improvement.
