St Mary’s Church restored to the city the name of the first monastic church to be built in Cardiff in 1080.
It was built in 1843 on land gifted by the Marquess of Bute, to serve the expanding docklands residential area, in a Parish carved of the area of the Tudor city Parish of St John the Baptist. It is a renowned for its distinctive anglo-Catholic tradition of worship.
It was one of the first churches of the city to welcome new Commonwealth immigrants as members, and is well known for its festive religious celebrations.
A very famous name in the Baptismal Register—that of Tiger Bay girl Shirley Bassey!
