Cardiff's Forgotten Past

Not much remains of the ancient past of this most modern and vibrant of cities. Not much on the surface that is!

However, on an hour long walk at a gentle pace through the heart of this most compact of city centres you can hear countless stories of a town long gone and see the clues that remain. Gang warfare between powerful families on the Tudor streets, pirates seeking haven and sheltered by nobles, statesmen holding the highest office in the land, and poor folk who worked hard but paid a heavy price for minor crimes.

On your guided walk you will also:

• Hear about how little the Medieval street layout has changed, and hear about life in Cardiff in centuries past;

• Hear about life for ordinary people in Cardiff in good times and bad times over the centuries.

• Bear witness to Cardiff's dramatic transformation through the industrial revolution, ending at its most modern public building, the stunning Central Library building.

Meet at the Tourist Information Centre in the Old Library. Walks last about an hour. Please check website for dates.

New for Spring 2011, combine a walk through Cardiff’s Forgotten Past, with a delicious made-to-order Welsh breakfast of your choice in one of Cardiff’s historic arcades. Cardiff History and Hauntings has teamed up with Garlands Eatery and Coffee House – the first ever winner of the South Wales Echo “Best Coffee House in South Wales” award and the home of beautiful made to order cooking with Welsh specialities.

For a single price of £8, you can settle down any time from 8.30am for breakfast with all the atmosphere of a Parisian café at Garlands in Duke Street Arcade, and enjoy a delicious choice ranging from full cooked breakfast (meaty or vegetarian), smoked salmon, or pancakes (or a lighter choice) – with tea or as much coffee as you can drink. At 10am, the walk will then commence as normal.
