City Introduction

Salonica (or Thessaloniki) (Θεσσαλον?κη) is the second largest city in Greece, and the capital and largest city of Macedonia, as well as the capital of Central Macedonia and Thessaloniki State.

History and Culture

The city was founded around 315 B.C. by the King Cassander of Macedon (Gr.Μακεδ?ν), on or near the site of the ancient town of Therma and 26 other local villages. He named it after his wife Thessalonica, a half-sister of Alexander the Great and princess of Macedon as daughter of Philip II. She was born on the day when her father defeated Thessalians.

Climate

Salonica is directly affected by the Mediterranean climate. And the place north to Salonika belongs to the Balkan climate, which is cold in winter.
