Park View
Tazishan Park has more than 80 kinds of plants and trees, including cedars, gingkos, camphor trees, crape myrtles, metasequoia, peach trees, sweet-scented osmanthus and yulan magnolias.
The park covers an area of 80 mu (5.33 hectares) with about 100 varieties of more than 6,000 bamboo plants in total. The forest view is decorated by lawns, lakes, pavilions and pathways.
Tazishan Park is a good place for people to relax, go fishing, have fun, climb, picnic and enjoy tea.
In addition, Tazishan Park is also the main location of the annual Chengdu lantern show.
Empyrean Tower
Empyrean Tower is located at the top of a shallow hill in Tazishan Park. The name of Empyrean Tower was inspired from a poem, Stepping Upon the Sanhua Tower in Jincheng, by Li Bai. In the poem, Li wrote that “climbing onto the top of the tower is like staying at the highest place.”
The tower reaches up to 70 meters and has 13 stories. It features an elaborate design and unique structure. The building, tower and pavilion are well matched. Ancient and modern folk architectural art are skillfully combined.
The local features are highlighted in its architectural style; Empyrean Tower looks like a tower from far and a building from up close. It is a landmark and splendid part of Chengdu.
Empyrean Tower was completed at the end of 1997,and visitors can choose to climb the tower by elevator or by stairs.
The park also has a bird-themed forest, occupying 30 mu of land, featuring 150 varieties of about 5,000 birds around the world.
The bird forest works to promote popular bird science among visitors through the performance of birds. It is a good place to learn about birds and relax.
Picnic Area
The picnic area has long been a favorite place for Chengdu people to have an outdoor picnic. Due to environmental concerns, the picnic area has banned barbeque, but still allows cooking that causes little pollution to surroundings.
The picnic area in the park has been a unique open-air picnic area in Chengdu since the 1970s.
The picnic area went through a makeover in 2002 by the government. It can now host more than 1,000 people. On weekends, the picnic area is filled with people, and citizens carry cookers and vegetables to fill the area. Late comers have to wait in the queue.
Park Makeover
The project to upgrade the park was launched at the beginning of September 2011, and 150 million yuan ($24.38 million) was invested. The transformation project was completed in the end of 2011. The transformed park has become an open forest park that includes big multi-function zones. It is enriched with mountain forest features and is capable of offering high-quality citizen entertainment projects.
The upgrade was carried out in three steps. The first step involved removing some of the old walls in the park to make open space for lawns and forests. The second step involved building a 450 meter cycling track along the river. The last step was upgrading all the facilities in general.
