The Lazaret Cave dates back to the Early Palaeolithic period and was a hunting base for pre-Neanderthal Man. The discovery of bones and remnants of the stone industry has allowed archaeologists to date the various occupations of the site back to between 200,000 and 130,000 years BC. The current excavation technique is based on a systematic excavation method.
