Inaugurated in 1867 by Napoléon III, the park is one of the largest green spaces in Paris and was built on former quarried land, which explains its steepness. Features include a lake, an island, little streams, a waterfall and several bridges including a bridge 65-metres-high spanning the lake. Several historic trees and rare species including two ginkgo biloba grow here. The park also attracts many species of birds and waterfowl. The view from the top of the belvedere is one of the most romantic in Paris.
Parc des Buttes-Chaumont: Rue Manin, Paris 19th - Metro Buttes-Chaumont
Description
The Buttes-Chaumont Park, in the north-east of Paris, is one of the biggest and original green spaces in Paris, measuring 25 hectares. Its construction on quarries explains its impressive steepness and change in levels and heights. Visitors can appreciate stunning views of the city from this hilly setting, especially in the Montmartre district.
The layout gives it a particular charm: caves and waterfalls, a suspended bridge, and a high viewpoint. It is brightened up with exotic, indigenous trees and numerous birds (seagulls, moorhens, and mallard ducks) share the area and enjoy the artificial lake. Entertainment for children also takes place in the park and there are break areas where you can get something to eat. A large construction and renovation site will be spread across the park from 2013 to 2016. The park will stay open during the works.
