Shopping in Edinburgh is simple and straightforward, we aim to show you the best place to go for that important gift to take home and also for that personal mementoe.

If you are shopping in Edinburgh you can shop indoors and out of doors in beautiful surroundings near historic buildings and very rarely far from somewhere to sit and relax.

Make shopping a pleasurable experience in the fabulous capital of Scotland.

Shopping at a glance

Edinburgh offers an unique shopping experience from Harvey Nicholas and exclusive designer stores to whiskey and tartan as traditional now as they were centuries ago. The best places to buy your tartan and whiskey are on the High Street but if designer ware is your preference then George Street and St Andrews Square are the best areas. There are many shops that will try to entice you in with their tartan wares but not all of these are genuine tartan and may lead to disappointment. Our suggestions are only suggestions.

Princess Street

Few shopping Streets compare to Princess Street. On the one side of the street is shops and on the other side are gardens with magnificent views of the Castle all the way along. The streets itself is so wide it seldom feels crowded. Except during festival time when Edinburgh becomes one of the worlds hottest destinations. The pace in Edinburgh is relaxed and so is the atmosphere on Princess Street making shopping a fantastic experience.

Best Shopping Streets

Edinburgh has great Shopping Streets and all in the City Centre. Rose Street for Hi Fi, George Street for fashion. Leith walk for delicatessens and interesting Music Shops. High Streets for Whiskey, Kilts and Tartan. The City Centre also has a range of High fashion outfits in an intimate series of streets off St Andrews Square.

Shopping Centres

Edinburgh has four main indoor shopping Centres, three of these are in the town centre. St James Centre just at the east end of Princess Street, Princes Mall next to Waverley Train Station and Ocean Terminal down by the water in a beautiful setting. We suggest to get to Ocean terminal from the centre of town take bus 22 otherwise it is a 45 minute walk. The other indoor centre is the Gyle shopping centre 25 minutes by bus from the city centre.

Fair Trade

Edinburgh has a number of fare trade shops and these are located around the city centre and further afield in Portobello. The Just World Shop is reached by the 26 and 15 bus from the town centre and sells various fare trade tea coffees chocolate and traditional goods well worth a visit.

Whisky Shops

Whisky "the water of life" Scotch a drink to be savoured and where better to savour it than in Scotland. In pubs whisky is one of the least expensive drinks you can buy less expensive than beer or wine. If you want drink whisky do so by visiting Edinburgh. So if its a Malt or a blend enjoy the experience of sampling your way around Edinburgh and by the way mines a double.

Tartan Shops

If you are looking for Tartan in Edinburgh visit the High Street shops where you can buy a full Bonnie Prince Charlie outfit as seen in the photo above for around £500 this is the traditional out fit for most Scottish Weddings.
