The White Tower which predominates at the old port of the city, it dates back in 1450 and was built by the Ottomans. It was part of the fortification of the city. Through the years the Tower changed uses and among others, it was used as a jail for life sentenced prisoners. It changed many names as well, such as Fortress of Kalamaria, Tower of Yenitsari and Blood Tower. Word has it that the modern name of the Tower was given when the Jewish prisoner, Nathan Guidili, painted it white in exchange to his freedom.
