The Shanxi Folk Customs Museum is located on the site of Department I of the former Shanxi Museum, that is, Taiyuan Confucian Temple. The latter was established in the eighth year of Guangxu in the Qing Dynasty (1882) and was relocated to the current site by Zhang Zhidong in the late Qing Dynasty when he was working as grand coordinator of Shanxi province. The museum occupies 31,000 square meters. On the axis of the site lie the main buildings of the screen wall, the hexagonal pavilion, the latticework star door, the big city gate and the Chongsheng Temple, from south to north. The museum consists of three yards, each of which looks broad and spacious with towering trees and making up an elegant environment. It is a famous tourist attraction in Taiyuan.
Shanxi has a long history and splendid culture. It is one of the birthplaces of the Chinese nation. Since ancient times, Shanxi has been an intersection between the Han nationality and the northern and nomadic nationalities, as well as a melting pot for the Chinese. The rich cultural sediment has fostered diversified folk customs, music and drama and cultural life in different parts of Shanxi and made it a treasure house for studying the Chinese Han folk culture as well. Based on modern technology and by means of exhibits, Shanxi Folk Customs Museum brings rich folk customs of various styles and forms to visitors and enables them to have a comprehensive and multi-angle understanding of Shanxi’s folk customs and cultural life. Additionally, under the theme of carrying forward the traditional Chinese culture, the Shanxi Folk Customs Museum will display part of the furnishings at the Confucian Temple, organize a yearly worship of Confucius and other related cultural activities and hold exhibitions on Confucius’ life, Confucian culture and the ancient imperial examination system of China. The museum will also make full use of its fine environment to hold such cultural and recreational events, such as, Spring Festival temple fairs and build itself into an important site for residents to enjoy its cultural life, leisure and entertainment. The museum will also establish extensive contacts with people in calligraphy and other art fields to make the museum one of the cultural centers in Shanxi.
