The Children’s Park in the city center has a total area of 119,000 square meters, 39,600 sq m of which are covered by Wenying Lake. The park, which boasts over 600 years of history, can be traced back to the Ming dynasty. It was then called Haiziyan and renamed People’s Park after the founding of the People’s Republic of China, and it is the only public park and green space left through the generations in Taiyuan. The park, which is now named “Wenying Park” has gone through 5 centuries and 4 periods of the Ming Dynasty, Qing Dynasty, the Republic of China and People’s Republic of China. It changed its name to “Zhongshan Park” in 1928, “Xinmin Park” in 1937, “Minzhong Park” in 1945, “Renmin Park” after 1949 and “Children’s Park” in 1982 successively. The park has a Dr Sun Yat-Sen Museum, Revolutionary Martyrs Monument, Samaritans Monument, Glazed Pagoda, Number One Scholar Bridge, Memorial of Taiyuan Branch of CPC, the only timber structure swastika-shaped building in China and many other key historical sites under state protection within it, which are both the essence of Shanxi’s culture and the cradle of revolutions in Shanxi.
