Sujiazuo phoenix and dragon lanterns originated from the Daoguang Reign of Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), by a craftman in Sujiazuo, a village in Jiaozuo. The villagers of Sujiazuo used to have colorful cultural activities during the slack season. When it comes time for the spring festival and temple fair to worship Fire God, in order to celebrate their harvest throughout the year, villagers will make lanterns in the shapes of different animals and plants, such as dragons, phoenixes, tigers and lotus flowers. They would hang these lanterns at front doors. Moreover, the Sujiazuoer would organize these lanterns and make them play different roles in folk tales and legends, and to dance with them. The so called phoenix and dragon lanterns dance is a representation of such celebrations. The sujiazuo phoenix and dragon lantern dance was listed in the second batch of National Intangible Cultural Heritages.
