Jinzhou Vice-General Yamen is the oldest, largest and most affected yamen of ancient times in Northeast China. It’s also one of the most well-preserved secondary local authorities in our country at present. Therefore, Vice-General Yamen is not only the pride of Jinzhou and Dalian, but also the pride of Northeast China.
Before 1998, Jinzhou was the political, economic and cultural centre of Liaonan prefecture. Due to its strategic position, all rulers of past dynasties attached great importance to it. Since the Ming Dynasty, Jinzhou had set up several important military and governmental institutions in the area.
The Jinzhou Vice-General Yamen site is located in the northern part of East Street in the city, so it is known as "East Yamen". This quaint building is particularly conspicuous in modern Jinzhou. The walls, made of grey bricks and tiles, are tall. We can experience its majesty even standing at the yamen gate.
It is a large courtyard with five gates and four yards, which covers an area of 10,000 square meters and has a building coverage area of more than 1,300 square meters. It has 17 buildings with 53 rooms with a long history that can be traced back to the Ming Dynasty.
In 1894, when the Sino-Japanese War broke out, the Japanese Second Army occupied Vice-General Yamen, using it as a headquarter. In November, Jinzhou town fell into enemy hands.
Tsarist Russia was defeated in the Russo-Japanese War in 1905, so Jinzhou fell into Japanese control again.
After reconstruction, many rooms were turned into showrooms. A host of exhibits, including cultural relics, waxworks, ceramic murals, pictures and texts present the war history of the Eight Banners in Jinzhou. In Northeast China, the museums of ancient yamen are unique. They are not just a great attraction but also a patriotic education base.
