The Moonlightmass Bicycle Ride #moonlightmass

The Moonlightmass Bicycle Ride began it life as an experiment on the social media platform “Twitter” and has subsequently morphed into Africa’s largest causal nighttime bicycle ride. If you in the city on a night of the full moon and fancy a bit of an outing with a difference, then look no further than this wonderful happening. Hundreds of cyclists of all ability’s, shapes and sizes gather from all over the peninsula and descend on the Green Point Stadium before exploring the city en-masse on two wheels.

Ride in your “moon shadow”

As the name implies, the ride takes place in light of the full moon every month and always departs at (or shortly after) 21h00. It’s a great opportunity for visitors to ride with like-minded people, see Cape Town at night and connect with locals in freewheeling and friendly surrounds.

No Bike, no problem

Taking part couldn’t be easier, all you have to do is show up with a bike and a helmet and be ready to roll! There are plenty of rental options in the vicinity and these service providers will ensure that you have all you need for your evening escapade.

Where do you roll?

The route starts at Green Point Circle (on the main road side of the Green Point Stadium) and continues to Granger Bay Boulevard, onto Beach Road, then Mouille Point on Beach Road, complete with refreshing spray off the Atlantic Ocean. You’ll carry along Three Anchor Bay Road to Green Point Main Road, and then regroup with everyone at the bottom of Long Street. From there its a gentle cycle up Long Street, doubling back down Loop Street, and stretch across Longmarket Street to the finish at Greenmarket Square.

The ride takes one hour and is 12km long.
