Watch out for football fans! The Berlin Football Tour takes you to 40 authentic places that reveal the deep connection between Berlin and the beautiful game. For example, the oldest football club in Germany, BFC Germania 1888, was founded in Tempelhof. The route focuses on both historical events and the athletes' performances. The places are marked with plaques; visitors can also get more information via modern media.
Cycling to the Olympic Stadium...
The first route, going from the Brandenburg Gate to the Olympic Stadium, was opened in May 2013. It focuses on the football history of the Weimar Republic (1918-1933) and the Nazi regime (1933-1945).
Starting from the Brandenburg Gate, the bike is the best way to get to the first stop. Until the 1990s, the lawn in front of the Reichstag was the most popular amateur football pitch in Berlin, home to many ardently played weekend matches. The route continues to 89 Bülowstraße, where the legendary coach Sepp Herberger lived. Other sites on the route include the Mommsenstadion, the Schlosshotel Grunewald, the Deutsches Stadion, the former Deutschlandhalle and, of course, the Olympic Stadium itself, which was built for the 1936 Olympic Games and hosted the World Championships in 1974, 2006, and 2011. Eventually, more routes focusing on different themes will be created.
