Overview

Tate Modern looks to reassess the work of a great modern artist with the ground breaking exhibition Henri Matisse: The Cut Outs.

More than 120 works by the colourful and innovative genius have been brought together for the first time, celebrating the period in Mattise's career when his spectacular cut-outs came into existence. A final chapter in a working life that spanned half a century, the cut-outs helped cement his place as one of the most significant colourists of all time.

Ranging from Mattise's first efforts, collected together in Jazz 1947, to The Snail in 1953, the works were brought about when ill health prevented him from the physical act of painting. One of the most memorable pieces of this collection is Large Composition with Masks, a bold effort that's over 10 metres long. Curated by Nicholas Cullinan, this landmark show is a brilliant display of pure, innovative talent.
