Marc Chagall

The largest retrospective ever devoted to Marc Chagall in Italy.

Over 220 works, mostly paintings, will guide visitors from his first painting ‘Le petit salon’ (1908), to the last of his monumental works of the ‘80s.

For the first time ever the exhibition will present works from the collections of his heirs, and some unpublished pieces, alongside masterpieces from major museums around the world.

The theme of the exhibition is centred on a new interpretation of Chagall’s language, whose poetic vein developed over the course of the twentieth century through the melding of major Western European traditions: from Jewish and Russian culture up to his encounter with French avant-garde painting.

The exhibition will be divided into sections: the first works created in Russia, his first stay in France and his subsequent return to Russia until 1921, the second period of his exile, first in France and then, in the '40s, in America. With his return to France and the final decision to settle on the French Riviera, Chagall regained his more tranquil poetic language, brightened by the colours and atmosphere of the southern coast.
