Dakar is the capital and largest city of Senegal. Located on the Cap-Vert Peninsula on the eastern Atlantic coast, Dakar is the westernmost city on the African mainland. It is Senegal’s political, economic, cultural and transportation center. Besides, it is home to the Senegal National Assembly and the Presidential Palace. As a regional port, Dakar is a hub on the Atlantic routes, an important portal of South Africa and an advantageous departure point for trans-Atlantic and European trade.
With diverse cultures, Dakar is full of lively arts and traditions. Residents from different ethnic groups sell all kinds of handicrafts, food, jewelry, cloth, timber and metal articles at bustling markets, such as Marché Sandaga and Marché des HLM. There are many museums and mosques in the city. Here, you can either stroll on cliffs and beaches or set out for Senegal National Park and Natural Reserve.
