The Gabinetto Vieusseux of Florence is two hundred years old and is celebrating with an exhibition in Palazzo Corsini Suarez.

It was January 25 1820 when Giampietro Vieusseux opened his reading cabinet where you could find magazines and newspapers in English, Italian, German and French. The main users were notable travellers, residents and many artists and poets who stayed in the city.

What is very interesting is the large number of women who were borrowers and associates, Florentines or otherwise, aristocrats, bourgeois, teachers.

The literary tastes and beloved authors of all these persons can be traced in the exhibit The Vieusseux of Vieusseux. Books and readers between the 19th and 20th centuries that recreates the environment of the different locations, with objects of that time, paintings, photographs, maps and brings to life scenes from the past with the guests of honour (Leopardi, Manzoni to mention just a few).

A cultural heritage of Florence, that bears witness to its liveliness and central position for the intellectuals of the 19th century, not just the Italian one.

The exhibition, free of charge, is open from January 27 to June 30 in Palazzo Corsini Suarez, via Maggio 42 Hours: Monday, Tuesday and Friday from 10am to 2pm; Wednesday and Thursday from 10am tp 5pm
