IN AN EFFORT to provide sustainable alternatives to flying, Trafikverket, Sweden’s Transportation Agency, has partially unveiled its plan to expand night train traffic to European destinations, such as Germany, Belgium, Switzerland.

The first route discussed is from Malmö, in Sweden’s very south, to Cologne in western Germany via Copenhagen, Denmark. From Cologne, passengers could then connect on other trains to many different European destinations.

In its partial report, Trafiverket also mentions a Stockholm to Hamburg route and the possibility to reach Frankfurt, Brussels, Berlin, and Basel by night trains from Sweden.

Details of the new program are still being determined, and a final report is expected at the end of April 2020. The night train service is expected to begin running in 2022 or 2023.
