A CITY LANDMARK – COLOURFUL IN EVERY SENSE

Ask any local for directions to somewhere in the city near or on Adderley Street and invariably the flower sellers and their market will be given as your point of reference. The Adderley Street Flower Market is a Cape Town institution. An adjective that best describes this landmark in the city is “colourful” and colourful these markets are in every sense! This market has it all – delectable scents, astonishing colours and wonderful sounds.

FLOWERS FOR A LAUGH

The sellers at this market, typically of Malay origin, belt out all sorts of encouragement to passers by in an attempt to coax them buy their wares. The trademark wit of this boisterous bunch is best appreciated if you understand Afrikaans, but there is always a wink and hug on offer for the perplexed. Flowers have been sold from this city site for over 100 years and the Adderley Street market offers not only great variety, but great value too.

LOCAL IS BLOOMING GOOD

Freshly cut flowers - including our local fynbos species - are stocked here from early morning to late evening, are available from the friendly flower sellers. Pick and choose from all the offerings to create your own floral masterpiece or have the sellers put together a creation for you. Simply give them your budget and they will do the rest, and with a smile to melt even the coldest hearts. Perfect as a gift or to brighten up any room and day.

Adderley Street – Cape Town’s main thoroughfare - has been home to these flower sellers and their colourful market for over 100 years now and is to be found between Strand Street and Darling Street, within easy walking distance of Greenmarket Square and other city “must see” attractions.

WALK THE WALK

Parking is not the easiest amenity to find in this part of town, so its best approached on foot. Tackle it yourself with your trusty guidebook or why not try a walking tour of the city. There are a number of excellent walking tours on offer that will unlock the culture and history of this most fascinating part of the city. The tours can be conveniently booked from Cape Town Tourism’s Burg Street Visitor Information Centre.
