100,000 m2 of specially-designed walkways bobbing on the lake will connect Monte Isola and the island of San Paolo to the mainland and invite everyone to ‘walk on water’.

Visitors can participate in this unique experience, and actually become a part of the contemporary art work, by walking for 3 km from Sulzano to the islands and back again.

Christo comments on his work: "As with all our other projects, ‘The Floating Piers’ is free and, weather permitting, can be accessed 24/7. There are no tickets, schedules, reservations or owners. ‘The Floating Piers’ are an extension of the road and they belong to everyone."

The walkways and streets of the towns involved in the project will be covered by a shimmering yellow fabric which changes hue depending on the light and the water that falls on it.

Christo’s project, conceived with his wife Jeanne-Claude in 1970, has only now been produced after the artist found in Italy and, more particularly, in Lake Iseo the ‘magical’ place for the construction. The installation site is easily accessible from Milan by train and car.
