Getting around London at night has just become a little easier with the launch of the London Underground’s first all-night service. More than 50,000 travellers took the night tube on August 19.

London mayor Sadiq Khan described it as a historic moment. He told the BBC, “"You can feel the buzz, you can feel the vibe. People are really excited.”

The 24-hour night tube will initially run on the Victoria and Central lines, covering the tube’s main east-west artery, and from Brixton (South London) in Zone 2 to Walthamstow Central to the north-east of the city.

The Metropolitan, Circle, District, and Hammersmith & City lines are scheduled to begin all-night running after they are modernised, while parts of the London Overground will be added in 2017 and the Docklands Light Railway by 2021.

Trains will run roughly every 10 minutes, according to tube operator Transport for London. On Friday night, London’s Oxford Circus saw 6,500 passengers tapping in – its busiest station.
