As one of Macao s most important industries, tourism has driven the development and mutual promotion of relevant industries including retail, catering, hotel and transportation, and played a positive role in promoting the moderate, diversified and sustainable development of Macao s economy.
City of creativity and gastronomy
Every tourism city has its unique selling points and strengths. Macao is a modern international tourism city full of vitality and cultural atmosphere committed to building a "World Tourism Leisure Center". Macao boasts the World Heritage site "Historic Centre of Macao" featuring the quintessence of more than 400 years of Chinese and Portuguese culture, and was designated as a new member city of UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN) in the field of Gastronomy at the end of last year to become China's third "Creative City of Gastronomy in China". It serves as another important tourism symbol apart from annual festivals and celebrations, international hotels, family entertainment, shopping and cultural & creative industries.
The tourism office has focused on enhancing Macao's brand image as a multi-day tourist destination, promoting cultural tourism and community tourism, developing diversified events, highlighting Macao's existing and novel tourism experiences through innovative promotion, and attracting tourists to explore Macao and prolong their stay in Macao. Earlier on, Macao's tourism mascot "Mak Mak" was selected through a design competition, which will promote Macao tourism worldwide and lead tourism to Macao as a pathfinder
The tourism office has constantly participated in influential professional conventions & exhibitions and organized tourism presentations across the world, to enhance Macao's image and popularity as an international tourism city.
"Multi-stop" tourism
Sustainable tourism is the future direction of numerous tourism cities including Macao. Regional tourism and "multi-stop" tourism are future tourism trends.
The tourism office has promoted Macao's tourism cooperation with international cities and neighboring cities, coordinated and participated in outward visits and exchanges of leaders of the SAR Government, and led Macao's tourism organizations and tourism industry in holding tourism presentations and tourism promotions targeting consumers locally.
Macao will grasp the tourism opportunity from the "Belt and Road" Initiative, the construction of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, as well as Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao, Guangdong-Macao and Zhongshan-Zhuhai-Macao cooperation. Based on the development of "multi-stop" tourism in Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, through Macao's road network and ever-developing urban rail network, Macao will build tourism products with different themes and promote "multi-stop" tourism in the world.
Taking an active part in WTCF events to enhance international popularity
As a council member and city member of the WTCF, Macao has taken an active part in Fragrant Hills Tourism Summit, Exploration: Expo & Marketplace, forums and other WTCF events since its founding in 2012. Witnessed by Macao, the WTCF has become a vital international non-profit tourism organization with the number of members soaring.
