Seoul is looking for more cities and international organizations to participate in the global campaign. Seoul hopes that the WTCF can also join the global campaign "Fair Travel Living Together " for the promotion of sustainable tourism in urban destinations around the world.

A city is a space where its residents can tell their own story and create their own culture, and that in itself is tourism content. Visitors to globally famous cities like New York, Paris, and Tokyo want to immerse themselves in each city’s own story, culture, and the lives of its residents. This reflects recent travel trends among international visitors to live like a local and try experiences unique to a certain destination.
Seoul continues to search for new ways to support unforgettable experiences for our visitors. The Seoul Metropolitan Government and Seoul Tourism Organization provide Seoul experience products and services through the online tourism experience platform One More Trip (www.onemoretrip.net), through which international visitors can try various experiences related to nightlife, sports and leisure, traditional culture, and more. In addition to One More Trip, Seoul delivers a convenient travel experience through the Discover Seoul Pass, which provides discounts and benefits at many tourist attractions and can be used as a transportation card.
On the City Image Improvement
The Seoul Metropolitan Government and the Seoul Tourism Organization are preparing countermeasures against overtourism in cities around the world. In an effort to open the dialogue on sustainable alternatives to overtourism, the city has hosted the Seoul International Fair & Sustainable Tourism Forum (www.seoulfairtourismforum.net) since 2016. This year, the third edition of the forum will be jointly held with the 7th UNWTO Global Summit on Urban Tourism. Through these events, Seoul plans to seek solutions for the sustainable development of urban tourism.
Spreading Fair and Sustainable Tourism
As part of the UNWTO 2017 International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development program, Seoul launched a global campaign on sustainable tourism with the UNWTO and Barcelona to achieve the vision of sustainable tourism that accounts for current and future economic, social and environmental impacts, especially concentrating on the relations between visitors and host communities. The global campaign underway is aimed at spreading fair and sustainable tourism and improving quality of life for local residents and tourists alike.
Actively Participate in Events
Seoul promoted its charms to China’s outbound tourism industry as a participant of the World Tourism Cities Expo held in Beijing in 2014. The expo was in its third edition, and unlike previous years, it focused on B2B consulting between tourism industry professionals instead of individual tourists. As a result, Seoul was able to meet over 250 outbound travel agencies, airlines, and media publications and conduct business consultations and tourism promotion all in one spot. Seoul participated in the event at a time when the number of Chinese visitors to Korea was growing rapidly and caught the interest of Chinese travel agencies by introducing the city’s tourism resources and events like Seoul’s DDP, Seoul Lantern Festival. In addition, the World Tourism Cities Expo was a valuable opportunity to benchmark the tourism marketing activities of major global cities and learn about the newest tourism trends. As WTCF members are major tourism cities, Seoul wants to actively participate in events like the World Tourism Cities Expo, not only in China but in destinations around the globe.
Participate in the Global Campaign
As mentioned earlier, the first global campaign on fair and sustainable tourism was launched last year during the Seoul International Fair and Sustainable Tourism Forum by the Seoul Tourism Organization with the participation of the cities of Seoul and Barcelona, and the support of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO). This year, STO and its partners will lead the 2018 “Fair Travel Living Together” Global Campaign to raise global public awareness of the issues related to fair and sustainable tourism, mobilize action from all involved stakeholders, particularly cities and global organizations, and promote fair and sustainable behaviors and respect for host communities from travelers.
