The Trevi Fountain, the largest Baroque fountain in Rome, is one of the city’s most popular and recognisable monuments, but it is situated in a relatively small Piazza di Travi which not only causes huge traffic jams of eager tourists, it also causes damage to the fountain itself.

It’s with this in mind that the municipality of Rome has proposed a better way to regulate the small space, Lonely Planet reported.

The proposal includes building a protective barrier around the fountain so that tourists cannot sit on the marble or jump into the water plus a maximum number of people allowed inside the Piazza at the one time which will be regulated by police stationed at each street leading into the Piazza.

Earlier this year, Rome implemented a spate of new tourism rules to discourage anti-social behaviour including “messy eating”.
